Online marketing opportunities are growing all the time. As the opportunities expand, it becomes more and more important for small business owners to diversify their marketing efforts.

Of course, the more you do the more time it consumes. Therefore, you have to be judicious in how you diversify and what tactics you use to get the word out about your business. Still, you cannot just rely on one source of links or traffic. It isn’t good business sense for one thing.

Dr. Pete has shared his list of 5 ways to diversify your online marketing. In a word, he says to diversify your:

  • Anchor text
  • Links
  • Traffic sources
  • Marketing
  • Point of view

These are fairly easy to do. Your anchor text should not be based on a few shallow key phrases. Google has advanced enough that you can use almost any phrase for anchor text. Yes, exact match phrasing should be done some of the time, but not all of the time. Diversify!

Regarding links, don’t just use one link building tactic. Get your links from a variety of sources – even non-relevant sources.

And traffic. If you’re still relying on Google for 80% of your traffic, then don’t be disappointed when they change their algorithms and you fall. There is no better justification for diversifying your traffic sources than Google Panda.

Marketing has always been a diversity discipline. Companies don’t just use billboards, or newspaper ads. They use every channel at their disposal. You should too.

And then there’s POV. Try to think about things in a different way. Get outside of yourself for a while. Can you see from a different perspective?

Online marketing is not a pill in a box. If you aren’t diversified in your approach to Internet marketing, then it’s time to diversify.
