Content marketing is a term that has gained newfound respect. In truth, online marketers have been doing content marketing for years, but for most of that time it was called something else.
In the early days, it was called “article marketing.” Then it was called search engine marketing. Then there were different channels – blog marketing, social media marketing, video marketing, etc. All of those channels can be wrapped up in one overarching term – content marketing.
The difference between content marketing and search engine optimization is the content marketing is any type of marketing online that requires the production of some type of content for the purpose of attracting attention to one’s products, services, or brand. That’s pretty much anything. If you produce content, then you are a content marketer.
Some types of content marketing include:
- Link building
- Image sharing
- Video marketing
- Mobile marketing
- Infographics
- Blog marketing
- Article marketing
This is just a short list. Any type of marketing you do online is content marketing.
It’s called content marketing partly because “search engine optimization” has grown staid. In some ways, it’s a term with some baggage attached to it. But “content marketing” is a new enough term that many unsuspecting business owners won’t draw the connection.
When it comes to terminology, it doesn’t really matter what you call it as long as you can do it effectively. Online marketers have been engaged in content marketing for years. They’ve just recently started calling it that.
